About AWEMS

Australasian Wilderness & Expedition Medicine Society

Who We Are

AWEMS is the peak professional body for wilderness and expedition medicine in Australasia. We represent clinicians, paramedics, nurses, and allied health professionals who provide medical care in remote, austere, and expedition environments.

Founded to advance the practice and education of wilderness medicine, AWEMS serves members across Australia and New Zealand — from emergency physicians working in remote communities to paramedics supporting search and rescue operations.

Our Mission

To advance the practice, education, and research of wilderness and expedition medicine across Australasia, supporting safe and effective medical care in austere environments.

We focus on:

  • Professional development and education for clinicians working in remote environments
  • Peer connection and knowledge sharing across disciplines
  • Annual conference bringing together leading practitioners and researchers
  • Advocacy for safe wilderness and expedition medical standards
  • Supporting members through career development and networking

Acknowledgement of Country

AWEMS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We recognise the deep connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country — including the remote and wilderness areas central to our practice — and we are committed to respectful partnership in all our activities.
